Quick Answer: Where Should I Take Engagement Photos in Edmonton?
The best engagement photo locations in Edmonton include Hawrelak Park (unbeatable fall colour), the Legislature Grounds (formal elegance), Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue (urban charm), and the river valley trails (natural beauty). Schedule your session 90 minutes before sunset for the best light. At MH Photography, Moein Habibi includes engagement sessions in most wedding photography packages — or you can book a standalone session. Serving couples across Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, and Alberta.
Why Engagement Photos Matter More Than You Think
Let me tell you something that surprises most couples: your engagement session is not really about the photos. I mean, the photos will be gorgeous — you will use them for your save-the-dates, your wedding website, your social media, maybe a framed print in your living room. But the real value of an engagement session is what it does for your wedding day.
Here is what I mean. On your wedding day, you will be in front of my camera for 8 to 12 hours. If we have never worked together before, those first few hours can feel awkward. Where do I put my hands? Where do I look? How do I stand? Is this my good side? These are completely normal feelings, and they show up in early wedding-day photos as stiffness and nervousness.
An engagement session solves this entirely. By the time your wedding day arrives, you already know how I work. You know my voice, my energy, my direction style. You know that when I say “walk toward me and pretend I am not here,” it actually produces beautiful images. You are comfortable, and that comfort shows in every frame from the moment I start shooting on your wedding morning.

| Wedding Packages That Include Engagement Sessions | 85% | Photography Industry Report, 2025 |
| Average Photographer Investment in Canada | $2,900 | WeddingWire Canada, 2025 |
That statistic is not a coincidence. The photography industry overwhelmingly includes engagement sessions in wedding packages because we know, from experience, that it makes the wedding day photos dramatically better. It is a rehearsal for your most photographed day. Think of it as a dress rehearsal — except you are wearing jeans and your favourite boots and sipping coffee by the river.
Top 10 Edmonton Engagement Photo Locations
I have spent years exploring Edmonton and the surrounding area for the perfect engagement session spots. Here are my top ten, based on hundreds of sessions and thousands of images. I have included honest notes on what makes each location special, what to watch out for, and when it looks its absolute best.
1. Hawrelak Park
The crown jewel of Edmonton engagement photography. The lake, the footbridge, the tree-lined pathways, and the fall colour make this an unbeatable all-around location. I recommend arriving 90 minutes before sunset and starting at the east side of the lake where the light filters through the tree canopy. Peak fall colour is late September through the second week of October.
2. Legislature Grounds
For couples who want a more formal, elegant feel, the Legislature Grounds deliver beautifully. The architecture, the reflecting pool, and the manicured gardens create a polished backdrop. In winter, the Legislature Lights transform the area into a sparkling wonderland that is perfect for cozy, romantic winter sessions.
3. Old Strathcona / Whyte Avenue
If you are a couple who fell in love over coffee dates, live music, and bookshops, Old Strathcona is your place. The neighbourhood’s colourful murals, heritage buildings, and eclectic storefronts create a lifestyle-photography feel that reflects real life rather than a posed portrait. The alley art behind Whyte Ave is particularly photogenic.
4. Walterdale Bridge
The sweeping white arches of the Walterdale Bridge create a dramatic, modern backdrop that pairs well with urban-chic styling. Best at golden hour when the arches glow warm. The south bank offers the best angle with the downtown skyline behind the bridge.
5. Mill Creek Ravine
For a more intimate, nature-immersed session, Mill Creek Ravine feels like a secret forest in the middle of the city. The creek, the boardwalks, and the dense canopy create beautiful dappled light. Best in spring when the creek runs high and the fresh greens are vibrant.
6. Elk Island National Park
Forty minutes east of Edmonton, Elk Island offers open meadows, pristine lakes, and wild bison. This is for adventurous couples who want something truly unique. The park is also a Dark Sky Preserve — perfect for astrophotography engagement sessions with the Milky Way overhead.
Photographer Tip
If you want bison in your engagement photos at Elk Island, we need to go early in the morning when the herds are near the road. By midday, they move deeper into the park. The Bison Loop Road is your best bet, and I always keep a safe distance — these are wild animals.
7. University of Alberta Campus
The U of A mixes Gothic-revival architecture with modern glass buildings, creating wonderful visual variety. If you met at university or simply love the academic aesthetic, this is a meaningful and photogenic choice. The view from campus across the river valley is stunning.
8. Ada Boulevard Lookout
Sweeping views of the river valley and downtown skyline from the Highlands neighbourhood. The tree-lined boulevard and character homes add warmth. This is a favourite for sunset sessions — the western view means the light is absolutely golden in the evening.
9. Banff & Lake Louise
Banff and Lake Louise are worth the four-hour drive for couples who want mountain majesty in their engagement photos. Moraine Lake, Vermilion Lakes, Cascade Mountain — every angle is a postcard. I travel to Banff regularly for destination engagement sessions.
10. Jasper National Park
Jasper is Banff’s quieter, more rugged sibling. Pyramid Lake, Patricia Lake, and the Athabasca Falls are all spectacular. Jasper is also a Dark Sky Preserve, so night sky engagement sessions here are otherworldly. About three and a half hours from Edmonton.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session
This is the question I get asked the most, and I have a simple philosophy: wear something that makes you feel like yourself, but the best version of yourself. You do not need to go out and buy a new outfit. If you have a favourite dress or a shirt that your partner always says you look great in, start there.
I recommend bringing two outfits to your engagement session. Start with the more dressed-up look while you are freshest, then change into something casual and comfortable for the second half. This gives you variety in your gallery and lets you relax into the session. Here are some guidelines that consistently produce great results:
- Coordinate, do not match. You do not need matching outfits. Choose colours that complement each other. Earthy tones — creams, taupes, sage greens, dusty blues, warm browns — photograph beautifully in outdoor settings.
- Avoid busy patterns. Large logos, bold stripes, and loud graphics compete with your faces for attention. Solid colours or subtle textures (like a knit sweater) work best.
- Think about the location. If we are shooting at the Legislature Grounds, something a little more formal works. If we are hiking at Elk Island, boots and layers are perfect.
- Bring layers. Edmonton weather can shift quickly, especially in fall. A jacket, scarf, or cardigan adds visual interest and keeps you warm.
- Shoes matter. You will be walking on trails, grass, and possibly uneven ground. Bring shoes you can actually walk in. Save the stilettos for a quick posed shot, then switch to something practical.
Photographer Tip
Bring a lint roller, a small mirror, and a comb. Little things like a stray hair across your face or lint on a dark jacket can be distracting in photos. Five seconds of grooming saves 30 minutes of retouching.
The best engagement photos are not the ones where you look perfect. They are the ones where you look at each other the way you always do — when no one else is watching.
When to Schedule Your Engagement Session
Timing matters for engagement sessions in two ways: the time of year and the time of day.
Time of year: Most of my Edmonton engagement sessions happen between June and October. Fall is the most popular and books out earliest — if you want fall colours at Hawrelak, you need to book by July at the latest. Spring sessions (May and early June) are beautiful but weather-dependent. Winter sessions are increasingly popular for couples who love the snow-and-cozy aesthetic, especially with the Legislature Lights as a backdrop.
Time of day: Golden hour. Always golden hour. This is the hour before sunset when the light is warm, soft, and impossibly flattering. I schedule every outdoor engagement session to capture golden hour. In summer, that means starting around 7:30 PM. In fall, around 5:30 PM. In winter, as early as 2:30 PM. I send you the exact times based on your session date.
I recommend scheduling your engagement session 4 to 8 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to order save-the-dates with your photos, update your wedding website, and — most importantly — build that comfort level with me well before the wedding day.
What to Expect During the Session
Most engagement sessions last 60 to 90 minutes. Here is what a typical session looks like with me:
- First 10 minutes: We walk, we chat, I get a feel for your energy. I start shooting casually to help you settle in. These are warm-up shots, and most couples feel awkward here — that is completely normal and expected.
- 10-30 minutes: We start with your dressed-up outfit. I give gentle direction — where to stand, where to look, how to hold each other. I mix posed portraits with candid prompts (“whisper something that will make her laugh”).
- 30-45 minutes: Outfit change (if applicable). We move to a new spot within the location for variety. By now, you are relaxed and the photos are flowing naturally.
- 45-90 minutes: This is golden hour. The light is perfect, you are completely comfortable, and this is where the magic happens. Some of my absolute favourite engagement images come from the last 20 minutes of a session when everything aligns.
You will receive your fully edited gallery within 2 to 3 weeks. Most galleries contain 60 to 100 images. Every photo is individually colour-corrected and edited. I do not batch-edit — each image gets personal attention.

How to Prepare (and Calm Your Nerves)
I want to address something that almost nobody talks about: most people are nervous before their engagement session. Even people who love having their photo taken feel a flutter of anxiety before stepping in front of a professional camera. This is completely, utterly normal. And here is the thing — I actually prefer working with couples who are nervous. Because the moment you forget about the camera and just look at your person? That is when the real magic happens.
Here is my preparation checklist for the best possible session:
- Have dinner or drinks together before the session. Seriously. A glass of wine and a shared appetizer 30 minutes before we meet will do more for your photos than any posing tutorial on YouTube.
- Tell me your story. Before the session, I will ask you questions about your relationship — how you met, your first date, what you love about each other. This is not small talk. I use these details to create moments during the session.
- Trust the process. Some of my directions might feel silly in the moment. “Walk away from me and then turn around and look at each other.” “Put your forehead against hers and close your eyes.” Trust me — it works.
- Leave your phone in the car. For 90 minutes, be fully present with each other. No notifications, no checking the score. Just the two of you and this moment.
Photographer Tip
Create a shared playlist of your favourite songs and send it to me before the session. I play music during sessions to keep the energy up and help you relax. When your song comes on, the real smiles come out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an engagement session take? Most sessions are 60 to 90 minutes. This gives us time for two outfit changes, multiple locations within the area, and plenty of golden hour coverage. Banff and Jasper sessions run longer — typically 2 to 3 hours — to take advantage of the travel.
How many photos will we receive? A typical engagement session gallery contains 60 to 100 individually edited images. Every photo is colour-corrected and processed with care. You receive the full gallery via online download within 2 to 3 weeks.
Can we bring our dog? Absolutely! Pets are welcome. I love including dogs in engagement sessions — they bring out genuine smiles and add personality to your gallery. Bring a friend or family member who can take the dog for a walk after the pet-included portion so we can focus on just the two of you for the rest.
What if we are not photogenic? Nobody thinks they are photogenic until they see photos taken by someone who knows how to direct them. My job is to make you look and feel natural. I give you gentle guidance on posing, I tell terrible jokes to get real laughs, and I create moments rather than poses. You will be surprised at how beautiful you look being yourselves.
Is the engagement session included in wedding packages? Yes. All of my wedding packages include a complimentary engagement session. It is that important for your wedding day results. Standalone engagement sessions are also available if you are not yet booking a wedding.
What if it rains on our session date? We reschedule at no extra charge. I monitor weather closely and will contact you the day before if we need to move dates. That said, light overcast skies are actually perfect for portraits — soft, even light with no squinting. A little drizzle can even add atmosphere.
How Much Do Engagement Photos Cost in Edmonton?
Engagement photo sessions in Edmonton typically range from $300 to $600 for a 60 to 90 minute session with a professional photographer. At MH Photography, all wedding packages include a complimentary engagement session. Standalone engagement sessions are also available for couples who want beautiful photos of this chapter. Photography packages start at $2,250 for weddings and $400 for family sessions.
